Research Interests

Computer applications in archaeological research, particularly the use of digital imaging for analysis and database applications.

Delivery of effective online education; construction of smart databases; AI modeling.

Analysis of material culture: microanalysis of archaeological materials and use of computerized imaging technology; traditional methods of woodworking and stoneworking; Native American arts in contemporary settings.

North American prehistory and ethnohistory, with emphasis on culture contact and change as embodied in shifting technological and adaptive strategies that are reflected in material culture.

Museums, museum displays, and public education.

History of anthropological method and theory

Current Research

I am currently working with an interdisciplinary team through the Idaho State University Informatics Research Institute to employ AI to classify diagnostic stone projectile points in the Intermountain West. The current prototype uses a neural agent to emulate a classification I developed for the Columbia Plateau (Lohse 1985).

We are also working with other archaeological typologists to extend this classification to the Northwestern Plains and Great Basin cultural areas.

We are beginning work on extraction of lipid residues from the surface of stone tools. Initial results indicate success in harvesting and identifying lipids through use of gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.
