Conference Schedule and Activities
The Plains Typology Conference consists of six sessions over three days. It will convene on Friday, (date to be determined) at 5:30 p.m, and end on Sunday, (date to be determined), at approximately 1 p.m.. Preconference and post-conference activities are also required of each participant. The flowchart below shows the proposed conference timeline.
PreConference
Before the Plains Typology Conference begins, participants are asked to
- Complete on-line conference registration form.
- Complete and mail signed letter of informed consent.
- Complete the Conference Expert Survey, on the Conference web site
- Email your current curriculum vitae, as an attachment, to the logistics coordinator.
- Arrange your travel plans and confirm with the logistics coordinator ( Paul Santarone ).
- Supply digital images of projectile point types.
Tentative Conference Schedule
Here is a brief overview of what will happen in each of the six sessions during the Conference. Each session will last from two to three hours.
Friday night, Session 1 (5:30 – 7:30 p.m.):
- Presentation of Conference goals and procedures;
- Training in the Simplot Decision Support Center ;
- Reaction time training and data collection
- Participant sketching of Plains projectile point types as geometric shapes.
Friday night, Dinner (7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.).

Saturday morning, Breakfast .
Saturday morning, Session 2 (8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.; 11:00 – noon)
- Using the SDSC system and knowledge elicitation protocol,
- experts create typology of their geons.
- experts arrive at consensus on categories for Plains points.
- experts arrive at consensus on types within categories for Plains points.
Saturday lunch break (noon – 1:30 p.m.)
Saturday, Session 3 (1:30 – 3:30 p.m.)
- Using the SDSC system and knowledge elicitation protocol,
- experts interact with SIGGI's classification of sketches.
- experts train SIGGI by agreeing/disagreeing with classification of sketches.
Break
Saturday, Session 4 (4:00 – 6:00 p.m.)
- Using the SDSC system and categories/types defined in Session 2,
- experts classify selected digital images submitted pre-conference.
- experts discuss critical features for Plains typology.
- experts arrive at consensus on tentative Plains typology.
Saturday, Dinner (7:00 – 9:00 p.m.)

Sunday, Session 5 (8:30 – 10:00 a.m.)
- Using the SDSC system and knowledge elicitation protocol,
- experts review and evaluate SIGGI's classification of digital images.
Sunday brunch

Sunday, Session 6 (11:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m.)
- Using the SDSC system and knowledge elicitation protocol,
- experts discuss outliers in the classification
- experts finalize Plains projectile point typology.
- experts define remaining problems, issues, tasks …..
12:30 p.m. – closing activity & end of conference
Post-conference
- Participants will receive report of new Plains typology.
- Participants will receive reports of SDSC sessions
